City of Split
The city of Split was founded as Greek colony of Aspalathos. After establishing control over the Dalmatia province, the Romans changed its name to Spalatum.
It was Roman emperor Diocletian who ordered in 293 AD a residence to be built for his retirement. Through centuries that followed, people inhabited the Diocletian's palace and turned it into a vibrant heart of what is nowadays the city of Split. This process of turning a palace into the city is what makes Split so unique and worth seeing.
The remains of Diocletian's Palace can be found throughout the city. The cathedral was built in the Middle Ages, reusing materials from the ancient mausoleum. Twelfth- and 13th-century Romanesque churches, medieval fortifications, 15th-century Gothic palaces and other palaces in Renaissance and Baroque style make up the rest of the protected UNESCO area.
While exploring the bustling city, you will find many galleries and museums worth seeing, as well as many cafes and restaurants that offer authentic tastes and flavors.
Let yourself indulge in all that Split has to offer and your stay will be one of many beautiful memorable experiences!
